General Assignment Reporter
Indiana University Radio TV Services
in Bloomington
The General Assignment Reporter is one who can cover any event, from hard news to features, on any given day.
The GA's day begins in the morning news meeting. This reporter is expected to bring story ideas to the meeting, which are found through beat checks, contacts, reading newspapers, etc. The GA will then be assigned to a story or stories. They will work with a photographer or shoot on their own. This reporter needs to think multi-platform with each story, for online, television, and radio coverage. The reporter needs to be able to update their stories throughout the day online.
Upon returning to the station, the reporter will view and log the video, listen to sound bites, b-roll, and natural sound. The reporter will write scripts, and have them approved by a manager or producer. The reporter will edit and put their own stories together for air and/or online.
The reporter will need to be a jack of all trades: anchor the daily television newsbreaks, construct webcasts, and construct radio stories.
A good General Assignment Reporter knows a little about everything, so reading the entire newspaper from front to back on a daily basis is a good idea. Also, keeping track of state and national news is a must. Most successful GA's are fast writers, as they often are working on a tight deadline.
